Why I like Nicki Minaj: No Haters Allowed!!!

So, this last Halloween I dressed up as . . . . (drum roll please) . . . Nicki Minaj also known as Nicki Lewinski also known as Nicki the Ninja also known as Nicki the Harajuku Barbi. (Yep, if you leave a comment requesting my Halloween picture I may post it). Yes, I, the self-identified black feminist, dressed up as a black female rapper. And not any black female rapper, but Nicki Minaj who is signed with Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money Crew. Now the question is how did I stumble upon Nicki Minaj? Well, I am glad you asked. I happen to be watching 106th and Park and Gucci Mane’s 5 Star Bitch came on. Of course, I was thinking to myself what is a five star bitch? And why do the girls have to be called  bitches?

Anyway, on the video Trina rapped then a young woman with black and pink hair started to flow. Her lyrics were of the typical rap variety, “I am rich bitch buying Fendi and Versace,” but how she delivered her lyrics caught my attention. Clearly, she could flow like most MCs, however, there was an added level of dramatic intonations that made me think to myself, “Wow, she’s different.” Of course, some of you reading this will probably look at me differently after reading this post, but I am impressed by Nicki Minaj.

Not only because she has a unique flow, but because she actually realizes that she is a role model for young girls. In recent interview with The Boom Box, she talked about how to get her name out there she had to embody very hyper-sexualized images of black womanhood to the point of people calling her the second coming of Lil’ Kim.  However, she said she realizes that she has to tone that image down because she realizes that she has young girl watching her and looking up to her as a role model. Well, perhaps I should be honest even if she did not tone down her image I would still love this girl pink weave and all. Yep, I said it.

So, what do you think of Nicki Minaj?
