Cornell Partygoers Hurl Bottles at Black Students While Referencing Trayvon Martin

Early Sunday morning, a group of party-goers atop the Sigma Pi fraternity house at Cornell University hurled beer cans and empty bottles of alcohol at a group of African American students, while taunting them with references to Trayvon Martin.

According to reports, Beverly Fonkwo was walking home with friends when they were bombarded by liquor bottles thrown off the roof of the fraternity. When they demanded that it stop, the party-goers reportedly yelled “Come up here, Trayvon,” and other racial references.

Sigma Pi President Zach Smith has sent out an email apologizing for the incident, alleging that the person responsibile for the incident was not a fraternity brother.

From The Huffington Post:

“‘I feel like it was targeted and racially motivated … we felt very threatened,’ Fonkwo said of the incident Sunday. Meanwhile, the assailants ‘were just laughing at the whole situation until we called the police and then they ran inside,’ she said.

Smith, the Sigma Pi president, said the fraternity is ‘sorry the incident happened on our premises.’ He said that a large number of outsiders — including alumni and friends of brothers — were attending the event.

Smith added that he was “shocked” upon learning of the incident later Sunday morning.”
