Justice for Rekia Boyd: Why Hasn’t Her Killer Been Charged?

A few months ago we told you about the tragic death of 22 year-old Rekia Boyd, who was shot and killed by off-duty Chicago police officer Dante Servin near Douglas Park.

In the early morning hours of March 20th, Boyd was hanging out with friends when Servin approached the group in his car, demanding that they quiet down. One of the individuals, 39 year-old Anthony Cross, allegedly responded with an obscenity. Servin then open-fired, striking Cross in the hand and (inadvertently) Rekia Boyd in the head. Rekia died later that afternoon.

The Chicago Police Department ruled the shooting “justified,” sparking protests and outrage. And almost two months later, Dante Servin still has not been charged with a crime in relation to the Rekia Boyd shooting.

According to the Grio, the CPD are still “investigating” the incident. In the meantime, Servin remains an active, on-duty CPD officer.

“Darian Boyd, Rekia’s older brother, told the Huffington Post that Servin had made comments prior to the shooting demanding some ‘respect’ from the community.

‘He basically said, ‘What do I have to do to get some peace, quiet and respect? Shoot someone?” Darian Boyd said. Darian Boyd added that several witnesses thought that Servin appeared to be intoxicated when the shooting occurred.

Boyd and Sutton started a website and petition hoping to find justice for their sister. Servin is still on duty with Chicago police as the investigation continues and the police have not commented on his status or the lawsuit against the department.”
