Who Will Stand Up For The Rights Of Those Without A Voice?
I’m a Community Organizer and I work with fathers who are younger or the same age as me. When I’m at community meetings or sitting around people who make decisions as to what goes on in the community, I always see and hear accomplished people making very broad and generalizing statements about the youth of their communities.
It hurts me because I once was a youth who was lost and brainwashed by what I thought was a good life; “The Streets”. I hate that we have policy makers and Politicians that make laws, rulings and judgments about the lives of people who they can’t even relate to. It’s not easy to be on the ground doing the work and touching the people that will be affected by the work you do. I hear the stories, feel the pain, and see the despair of the people who so many have given up on.
What happens to most of us when we generally do what is right by finishing school, getting a job and ultimately going on to be a productive citizen? That sounds like the average American life. For some of us these are the things that were instilled in us at an early age however what happens when you do not acquire those certain attributes? I believe you become a product of your environment and you condition yourself to become what you see every day. Everyone in this world doesn’t grow up with two loving parents, someone to teach them values, and how to go about life. We cannot forget about the individuals who stories are never heard but lives are affected everyday by people who can’t relate.
