VIDEO: Jonesboro Police Release Reenactment Video of Chavis Carter’s ‘Suicide’

Responding to mounting pressure from the media and general public, the Jonesboro Police Department has released a reenactment video that they believe proves that it was possible for 21 year-old Chavis Carter to have shot himself in the head while handcuffed in a police cruiser.

The video purportedly shows an officer, similar in size to Cater, being handcuffed and placed into the back of a cop car. He then pulls out a toy gun and places it against his head.

Much of the public outcry regarding the incident stems from the seeming implausibility of Carter taking his own life under such circumstances. Controversial Jonesboro Police Chief Michael Yates begs to differ.

“‘The average person that’s never been in handcuffs, that’s never been around inmates and people in custody would react exactly the same way that you just did, about how can that be possible,’ Yates said. ‘Well the fact of it is, it’s very possible and it’s quite easy.’

Yates has also said that eye witness accounts and dashcam video support the account given by the two police officers on the scene when Carter was killed.”

Whether or not the video will stem the tide of anger in the Jonesboro community and beyond remains to be seen. Many are calling for Chief Yates to step down, and Carter’s family and friends remain skeptical of the official police story.

For one thing, Carter was shot in the right temple, yet he was left-handed. Also, he called his girlfriend during the initial stop and promised to call her from jail, which is decidely not the behavior of a suicidal person.

And of course, there’s the fact that he was searched twice by the arresting officers. How could they not have found the gun he allegedly used to shoot himself?
