A basketball tournament over the weekend brought together several rival Chicago gangs for a peaceful day of fun. Awesome! What else can we do to promote peace on the streets of Chicago?
Are you (still) rooting against James and the Heat tonight? If you’re rooting for or against James, why? Would a championship rehabilitate James’ image?
I have beef with Brittney Griner. It’s not because the Baylor University women’s basketball team she leads beat Notre Dame in the women’s NCAA Division 1 championship a couple of weeks ago, and I like an underdog–even if it is Notre Dame. It’s not because my beloved Tennessee Lady Volunteers were one of Baylor’s casualties [...]
So, I will admit I watch Basketball Wives. Yes, I do. However, I think I have to draw the line at LA Basketball Wives. It’s too much. In particular, it’s the colorism of the show that is the most glaring issue for me. On the very first episode, all the light-skinned women (i.e. Gloria Govan, [...]
It seems every day there’s a topic that has my timeline jumping. Tuesday morning there were still smatterings of conversation about CryGate 2011 but the big topic of conversation was Jalen Rose and his controversial remarks regarding Duke basketball’s recruiting habits. Rose, in his soon to be released documentary, remarks that he has a personal [...]
This summer, the WNBA will tip off its 15th season. Some are surprised that it has lasted this long. Most whine that women’s basketball isn’t entertaining. There are few dunks, very little high flying. The players aren’t as big, aren’t as strong and they aren’t as fast. The WNBA isn’t for those people. Unfortunately, those [...]
A few weeks ago, LeBron James was criticized in the media for making comments that many considered “pro-contraction”. He quickly recanted his statement, going so far as to admit that he had no idea what the word contraction even meant. (I believe him.) But it’s a conversation that looms over the NBA. With the bleak [...]
The other day, I was talking to my so-not-a-sports fan friend, rrrr about the LeBron James situation. I mentioned how people took real issue with the slavery as analogy aspect of the whole debate. I know I said something about the plantation model in my previous post about LBJ, but I wanted to return to [...]
There is so much wrong with this entire LeBron James fiasco it would take a year to flesh it all out, by which time LeBron may have his first ring (courtesy of Dwyane Wade and the backup dancers down in South Beach). Reactions have been varied, as expected. This decision will affect the NBA game [...]
Sometimes, I make myself sick. I waited for the LeBron James ESPN special, “The Decision,” like it was a Michael Jackson music video premiere. (Remember the time?) I sat in front of the television and waited for LBJ to moonwalk, spin, grab his crotch, and scream “Shamon,” at Jim Gray. But, alas, that never happened. [...]
Far too many Black youth continue to be demonized, criminalized and murdered.
Enough is enough!
In response to this intensifying crisis, the Black Youth Project (BYP) has launched “The Pledge.”
With “The Pledge,” we are asking individuals and organizations to close ranks around black youth and make a commitment to take action and fight with black youth as they confront a relentless crisis. We at the BYP believe that each person can make a difference by doing something!
By taking The Pledge we not only articulate our concern about black youth, but symbolically unite our voices with others who will work to confront this crisis.
If we each take action, whether it is starting a group, signing a petition, or mentoring a young person in your neighborhood, then we all become a part of the solution.
