Every week, the Black Youth Project collects the top news stories about black youth from across the country. This week: “Are black male doctors becoming endangered?,” “Feds probing Seattle schools’ treatment of black students,” and more!
At just 18 years-old, Polite Stewart has already earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Southern University. Congrats to this talented young man! He’s just getting started!
Emmanuel Ohuabunwa not only graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in neuroscience, but he did so with a 3.98 GPA. Congrats to Mr. Ohuabunwa on this phenomenal achievement!
Jefferson Parish School Disrict’s school psychologist Mark Traina launched into a virulently racist tirade through his twitter, declaring that ‘young black thugs’ need to be ‘put down.’ Are these the kinds of people to whom we entrust the education of our youth?
Speaking with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News, Rivera claimed a recently-leaked surveillance video shows that Trayvon Martin was “dressed in thug wear,” showing that ZImmerman’s actions were “not ‘profiling,’ but assumptions made ‘based on a reasonable comparison.’” Thoughts?
Family, friends and community members are still furious over the death of 22 year-old Michael Lembhard, who was shot and killed by police officers last month. And the anger only intensified when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo denied requests for a special prosecutor to investigate the shooting.
Far too many Black youth continue to be demonized, criminalized and murdered.
Enough is enough!
In response to this intensifying crisis, the Black Youth Project (BYP) has launched “The Pledge.”
With “The Pledge,” we are asking individuals and organizations to close ranks around black youth and make a commitment to take action and fight with black youth as they confront a relentless crisis. We at the BYP believe that each person can make a difference by doing something!
By taking The Pledge we not only articulate our concern about black youth, but symbolically unite our voices with others who will work to confront this crisis.
If we each take action, whether it is starting a group, signing a petition, or mentoring a young person in your neighborhood, then we all become a part of the solution.
